Project Overview – Bridge Lead Paint Abatement
Project Overview
Bridge Lead Paint Abatement
Location: British Columbia, Canada
Sector: Bridge Maintenance, Lead Paint Removal
The bridge, approximately 70 meters long and containing 125 metric tons of steel, requires targeted abatement to support its full replacement. The primary task is to clear lead-painted surfaces on bolts and specific sections of girders where demolition cuts will be made.
The Laser Cleaning Process
Using high-power fiber laser technology, the lead paint removal process is designed for precision and environmental safety:
Targeted Ablation: The laser vaporizes lead paint and primer only in the exact areas required for cutting and bolt removal, leaving the rest of the coating intact to prevent unnecessary lead exposure.
Surface Verification: The process restores the steel to a bare-metal finish, allowing for inspection and subsequent demolition by unprotected workers without the risk of inhaling lead fumes during torch cutting.
Containment and Capture: All vaporized lead materials are captured by the HEPA-filtered fume extraction, contained and removed from the designated areas, ensuring a clean workspace that complies with provincial and federal regulations.
Zero Secondary Waste: Unlike traditional methods, the laser process eliminates the need for water or abrasive media, which simplifies waste management on-site.
Operational Requirements
- Safety Standards: The work is performed under a strict Lead Exposure Control Plan and site-specific Lead Risk Assessments.
Training & Access: All personnel must complete the 6-hour site orientation and the online E-Railsafe training before mobilizing to the site.
This method effectively replaces traditional hazardous stripping or high-volume blasting, providing a surgically precise solution for lead-impacted infrastructure projects.
