The Challenge: Complex Geometry and On-Site Constraints
The components—including massive bull gears, pinion shafts, and connecting rods—were coated in layers of tough industrial paint and localized rust.
Precision Surfaces: Cleaning the gear teeth and splined shafts required a method that wouldn’t alter the microscopic tolerances of the metal.
Environmental Impact: Traditional sandblasting was not an option at the customer’s facility due to the massive amount of airborne dust and grit that would contaminate surrounding sensitive machinery.
Chemical Hazards: Solvent stripping would have required extensive containment and hazardous waste disposal protocols on-site.
The Solution: Mobile Laser Ablation
Power Laser Inc. deployed a mobile fiber laser system to perform the cleaning directly on the shop floor.
Selective Ablation: The laser was tuned to vaporize the paint and rust while reflecting off the structural steel. This ensured that the machined faces of the connecting rods and the sharp edges of the gear teeth remained perfectly intact.
Clean Operation: Because the laser process produces no secondary waste (like grit or contaminated water), the cleaning was performed safely in a shared workspace without disrupting other facility operations.
Speed and Accessibility: The high-power beam easily reached into the recessed areas of the gears and the internal threads of the components, areas that are typically difficult to reach with mechanical tools.
The Result
The pump components were restored to a pristine, bare-metal finish.
Ready for Reassembly: By removing every trace of oxidation and old coating, the customer was able to perform a thorough visual and dimensional inspection immediately.
Zero Residue: The parts were left “hospital-clean,” ensuring that no abrasive particles remained to cause premature wear once the pump was returned to high-pressure service.
