Power Laser Inc. completed a critical maintenance project for the Alberta oil and gas sector, targeting the power end components of a heavy-duty Triplex Plunger Pump. The objective was to strip away heavy operational fouling and oxidation to prepare the parts for precision reassembly.
The Challenge: Oilfield Sludge and Oxidation
Triplex pumps operate under extreme pressure and continuous duty. Over time, the internal power end components — including the connecting rods, crossheads, pinion gear shaft, and main bull gear — accumulated a thick layer of baked-on oil, industrial sludge, and surface rust.
Tolerance Risks: Traditional cleaning methods like sandblasting or grinding run the risk of altering the critical dimensional tolerances of the gear teeth, splines, and bearing caps.
Residue Hazards: Chemical solvent baths can leave residues or require extensive secondary cleanup, delaying the rebuild process.
The Solution: High-Power Laser Ablation
To safely remove the buildup, Power Laser Inc. utilized a high-powered fiber laser system.
Precision Cleaning: The laser energy vaporized the dark sludge and rust layer by layer. Because the laser reflects off the underlying bare metal, it effectively stripped the contaminants without micro-pitting or etching the machined surfaces.
Protecting Mating Surfaces: The non-abrasive nature of the light beam meant that sensitive areas, such as the splined shafts and the precise mating faces of the connecting rod caps, were perfectly preserved.
Clean Process: The ablation process captured the vaporized particulates immediately, leaving no grit, water, or chemical waste behind to foul the pump housing.
The Result
The components were completely restored to a clean, bare-metal finish. By eliminating abrasive wear and bypassing the need for heavy solvents, the pump internals were prepped for immediate, reliable reassembly, ensuring the equipment could be rapidly redeployed to the field.
